Mumbai: A total of 700 bird injuries were recorded in the last two days of the kite flying festival in MMR, even as the Mumbai police booked 23 persons for the illegal use of nylon manja to fly kites. Most of the injured birds were found in the western suburbs — Goregaon, Malad, Kandivli, Borivli, and Dahisar.
With the latest police action against nylon manja, the total number of police cases lodged since January 10 rose to 42, while material worth Rs 88,325 was seized. Mitesh Jain, an animal activist from Karuna Trust Virar, told TOI: “Various animal rights groups set up around 25 bird rescue camps in various parts of Mumbai and the extended suburbs on Jan 14 and 15. A total of 682 injured birds were rescued, as per data from each bird camp. In all, 511 bird injuries were recorded in camps set up in Malad, Goregaon, Kandivli, Borivli, and Dahisar.”
Jain, honorary animal welfare officer of Animal Welfare Board of India, added: “The other option of using sharp, glass-coated manja is also harmful to the birds and humans.”
