Mumbai police have submitted that actor Armen Ataine, an accused in the Torres scam case, falsely claimed to be Indian and obtained a fake birth certificate

MUMBAI: In a remand hearing where two accused in the Torres scam case—Tausif Riyaz alias John Carter, CEO of Platinum Hern that owns Torres Jewellers, and Ukrainian actor Armen Ataine—were remanded to judicial custody, police submitted that the actor had falsely claimed he was an Indian and had even procured a fake birth certificate. Police said appropriate criminal action has been initiated against him.
Police also submitted that until Jan 31, they had received 10,848 complaints related to the scam.
Meanwhile, the victims have moved a plea seeking a fair probe and also for periodic updates on the status of the investigation. The plea said that this will ensure that lakhs of gullible depositors all over the country are updated or informed of the progress of the investigation and do not suffer from any anxiety or a feeling of helplessness.
A separate plea also seeks issuance of warrants against the absconding accused.
