THANE: As many as 10,000 stray dogs from Thane and its suburbs will be administered the anti-rabies vaccine in a special seven-day drive undertaken by the municipal corporation along with NGOs starting Wednesday, January 29, officials informed.
As per the plans, 25 teams have been formed, each including a doctor and three workers, who will be assigned specific locations from various parts of the city based on complaints received about dog bites or attacks from residents and dog feeders, Dr Kshama Shirdokar, a veterinarian at the Thane corporation, said.
Officials mentioned that daily dog bite incidents weren’t recorded by the corporation.
The teams will vaccinate stray canines in these areas, which the corporation says will minimise the risks to humans due to dog bites, officials said. Last year, a similar drive saw 7,409 strays being vaccinated.
Meanwhile, a group of residents from Hiranandani Estate in Thane have approached the state Child Welfare Commission regarding frequent instances of stray dog attacks on children and elders in their locality, which they claimed was discouraging children from venturing out to play in nearby parks and also while attending school.
