THANE: As many as 311 revellers were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol on December 31 under the Thane police commissionerate. The previous year reported 297 cases.
In addition, the police also booked around 58 offenders for riding pillion on motorcycles piloted by drunken riders. The majority of the cases were reported by the Narpoli traffic unit in Bhiwandi at 27, followed by Kalyan and Kolsewadi at 26 and 25, respectively, followed by Mumbra at 23.
In Thane city, the Kasarwadavli traffic unit, which oversees the busy plush Ghodbunder road stretch that has some prominent drinking joints, recorded 17 cases, followed by the Wagle estate area that shares its boundary with Mumbai and hosts several liquor joints too.
“We started our drives last week and registered nearly 202 cases in the last four days before New Year’s Eve. We also appealed to revellers not to drink and drive and interacted with owners of restaurants and bars in the region to ensure their customers didn’t drive back home under the influence of alcohol. Simultaneously, we deployed teams at prominent road junctions,” said DCP (traffic) Pankaj Shirsat.
Drunk driving attracts a prison sentence of up to six months and/or a fine of up to Rs 10,000 for the first offence, explained officials.
