Mumbai: Goregaon police on Friday arrested a suspect for allegedly swindling three family members of Rs 10.6 lakh through stock market investment schemes, promising substantial returns. The suspect, Vaibhav Thombare, is accused of facilitating bank accounts for cyber criminals.
Police reports indicate that the complainant, a 35-year-old IT officer at a private bank. His wife received several stock market investment messages on her mobile. She initially invested Rs 2 lakh and received initial returns. Officers noted this built her trust in the scheme. Subsequently, she, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law decided to invest. They were added to a WhatsApp group that shared regular stock market updates.
Their investments appeared to generate profits, leading them to transfer some earnings to their bank accounts. However, when they attempted to contact the advisor, he became unresponsive and failed to return their principal amount and profits. tnn
