Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai crime branch unit-3 team arrested the key accused, Faizan Shaikh (22), who fatally assaulted IT professional Shivkumar Sharma (45) in Kharghar in a road rage incident on Feb 2. The accused, Faizan Shaikh, was apprehended from Bandra early on Sunday.
On Feb 2, around 8.30 pm, Sharma was returning on his bike to his Kharghar residence when two motorcycle-borne men waylaid him on the road between Belpada and Utsav Chowk, claiming that he overtook their bike and could have hit them. After an altercation, the key accused, Faizan, riding the bike, repeatedly struck Sharma on the head.
The injured Sharma went on his bike to Kharghar police station, where he lodged a complaint and soon collapsed. Sharma was rushed to the nearby private hospital, where he was declared dead due to internal head injuries.
ACP (Crime) Ajay Kumar Landge said, “After the road rage incident, we arrested the key accused’s pillion rider, Mohammad Rehan Ansari (22), on Feb 11 by tracing his location near Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). He was remanded to police custody till Feb 15 and thereafter remanded to jail custody. Both the accused worked as delivery boys for a food delivery app. However, they kept switching their jobs, and hence we were unable to trace them. But, by human intelligence and a network of police informers, we were able to pin down the accused. Our police team scanned around 350 CCTV camera footages across Navi Mumbai to track down the duo accused.”
A police officer informed that the key accused, Faizan Shaikh, gave the police a wild goose chase as he would keep his mobile switched off and intermittently switch it on as he was aware that the police were behind him for the murder case registered against him. Hence, he was hiding by taking shelter at the religious places in Mahim and Tardeo. When he switched on his mobile to talk to a family member, his location was tracked, and he was apprehended early on Sunday. Shaikh has been remanded to police custody till February 28.
