Mumbai: After seizing more than 600 e-bikes—largely from food and grocery app delivery boys — for traffic violations recently, the traffic department has issued a warning: follow rules, or face the music.
Joint police commissioner (Traffic) Anil Kumbhare told TOI that he would write to the authority concerned to revoke business operational licence if delivery boys continue to violate traffic rules.
An 11-day special campaign was carried out this month following frequent complaints of e-bike users jumping signals, riding rashly, or in the wrong direction. Police lodged 181 cases under Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and over 1,900 cases under various local acts. More than 600 e-bikes were seized and 180 delivery boys fined.
“Reckless riding by e-bikers, largely delivery boys, is endangering the life of common people…If violations continue, we will ask the authority concerned to revoke licences of these businesses,” said Kumbhare.
In a three-day drive in August, the traffic department seized 290 e-bikes for violations. Fines running up to Rs 1.63 lakh were recovered.
Road safety activist Mohammed Afzal said there is immense pressure on delivery boys to meet deadlines. “Some grocery apps promise delivery within nine minutes… Such gimmicks can prove fatal for employees.”
He recalled that years ago, when he was part of a road safety welfare group, he had met the management of a pizza outlet chain that offered free pizzas if delivery was not done in half an hour. “Delivery deadlines now are tighter now… I strongly oppose deadlines forcing delivery boys to risk their lives and violate traffic rules,” he said, expressing hope that Bombay high court takes up suo-moto cognisance of the issue.
