Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday suggested that there should be guidelines for the police department on how its personnel should conduct themselves on social media.
The HC also asked a deputy commissioner of police (DCP) to inform by Jan 27, what action or steps it proposes to take after probing a police sub-inspector who allegedly sent a Facebook friend request to a woman complainant.
A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale last week said, “We fail to understand how an officer investigating the case of the petitioner, a lady, can send such a friend request to her or, in fact, to anybody whose cases he is investigating.” On Tuesday, the concerned DCP and other officials from Samata Nagar police station were present in court, and additional public prosecutor Prajakta Shinde said the probe was on.
The woman’s counsel, Vijay Kantharia, meanwhile, said her complaint of alleged theft in her house was lodged as an FIR by the police, and the HC recorded this fact.
