Fishing boat damaged after being hit by Chinese cargo ship

Mumbai: A fishing boat was damaged and almost sank off the coast of Madh Koliwada in the city’s Malad area after colliding with a Chinese cargo vessel past midnight on Saturday. The fishing boat was part of the eight Savati Boats that were fishing together. It soon began taking on water after being hit by the Chinese vessel. Following distress signals, nearby Savati fishing boats rescued the boatman and towed the damaged vessel to Madh jetty. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) monitored the situation after receiving the distress call. The collision did not result in any casualty or injury.
According to an ICG official, the vessel belonged to Madh Koliwada inhabitant Hemdeep Harishchandra Tipri. The ICG officials said that they had collected information about the merchant cargo vessel and would forward it to the Director General of Shipping. “The DG Shipping will take a call on action against the cargo vessel,” said the ICG official.
The ICG official said,”Water partially ingressed into the boat after the cargo vessel collided with it. Upon receiving the call, nearby fishermen rushed to the scene and successfully prevented the boat from sinking. Our vessels were promptly deployed for assistance. The boat was safely towed to the shore,” said the official.
