NEW DELHI: A Maharashtra court on Tuesday sentenced Walmik Karad, a close aide to NCP minister Dhananjay Munde, to 14-day judicial custody in connection with a Rs 2 crore extortion case linked to the murder of a sarpanch in Beed district.
Karad, who had surrendered to the police in Pune on December 31, was initially remanded to 14-day police custody.
He was later brought from Beed and presented before the court in Kej on Tuesday. Karad faces charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA), officials said.
Dhananjay Deshmukh, the brother of the murdered sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, staged a protest in Massajog village, Beed, on Monday, demanding that Karad be charged under MCOCA.
Before surrendering, Karad posted a video on social media, alleging that he was being falsely implicated in the murder due to political rivalry.
Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Kej tehsil, was abducted and brutally murdered on December 9, allegedly for opposing an extortion attempt by individuals who had demanded money from a windmill company operating in the area.
