After pedestrians report injuries, Thane tyre killers deactivated

Thane: The Thane traffic police temporarily deactivated tyre killers barely a fortnight after they were installed at Shivaji Path. This decision followed public objections regarding the gadgets injuring unwary pedestrians walking the narrow road leading to the railway station.
Even though the tyre killers managed to deter wrong-side driving, especially by auto drivers on the arterial stretch, the police stated they would install CCTVs at the spot. This will help them monitor and get a real-time idea of the complaints and modify the system if required.
TOI had highlighted the issue last week about unwary pedestrians suffering injuries due to the spikes. “The tyre killers installed on an experimental basis on Shivaji Path have been deactivated until the CCTVs are installed. We want to check if pedestrians are accidentally walking in the opposite direction, and if not, we can adjust the angle of the spike.” said Pankaj Shirsat, DCP traffic, Thane. — Manoj Badgeri
