Mumbai: A 52-year-old woman residing in Govandi fell victim to a fraud of Rs15,200 whilst booking railway tickets from Kalyan to Prayagraj. The victim, UV Mane located a fraudulent agent via Just Dial, who committed to arrange return journey tickets to Mumbai but became unreachable, according to the police.
The Deonar police received Mane’s complaint on Saturday. “The team is trying to track down the accused who claimed to be a travel agent and has provided his contact details on Just Dial. We are also going to summon the officials of Just Dial who have uploaded the person’s number to know whether a verification process was carried out before posting the contact details,” said a police officer of the Deonar police station.
Seeking to book train tickets for travel on Feb12 with a return journey on Feb 14. In the complaint, Mane said, “The person called and assured of a ticket through VIP quota and asked to WhatsApp my PAN card and also Rs 800 advance.”
After transferring the initial amount, the agent claimed to have secured seats on Jaynagar LTT Express from Kalyan to Prayagraj and requested the remaining Rs14,400. “Mane realised the deception upon checking her waitlist status online the day before travel. No ticket existed on the website. The agent, when contacted, admitted to issuing fake tickets and advised against travelling,” a police officer stated.
Subsequently, the agent became unresponsive when Mane attempted multiple times to reach him.
