With hunt for land still on, IIT may lose out on infra funds

Panaji: Union Budget on Saturday announced additional infrastructure grants for one of the new Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in the country, created after 2014. The Goa IIT is a new addition to IITs, which became operational in 2016. However, the institute may lose out on the infrastructure grants as the state is yet to finalise land for the permanent campus for the Goa IIT, nearly nine years after its establishment.
The finance minister said the total number of students in 23 IITs has increased 100%, from 65,000 to 1.35 lakh in the past 10 years, and that additional infrastructure will be created in the five IITs started after 2014 to facilitate education for 6,500 more students.
Grants to central universities and IITs have also been increased, it was announced. However, Goa IIT’s original plans for expansion have had to be slowed down as the institute is facing space constraints at its temporary campus at Goa Engineering College premises at Farmagudi.
In Oct last year, state govt’s ambitious plan to set up the IIT Goa campus at Rivona, Sanguem, hit a roadblock due to issues pertaining to the title of the land. It forced govt to once again begin the hunt to identify new land.
Several land parcels identified for the permanent campus over the years have either been rejected by the Union education ministry’s site selection committee or faced protests from locals.
