UDUPI: The Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) revised the drinking water tariff with a reduction of 18% to 25%. Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna and CMC President Prabhakara Poojary stated that the reduction in drinking water rates will be implemented with effect from December 1.
The Udupi municipal council reduced the rates for domestic, commercial, and industrial connections, providing relief to people, they said.
Due to the unscientific increase in drinking water rates during the administrator’s tenure, which was a financial burden on the public, the rates for connections were reduced by 18% to 25% based on water usage.
The reduction will benefit the general public of Udupi city. The minimum monthly rate for domestic drinking water connections was reduced from 88 rupees to 72 rupees. For usage up to 8,000 litres, the rate per thousand litres of water decreased from Rs 11 to Rs 9. For usage up to 15,000 litres, the rate per thousand litres of water decreased from Rs 15 to Rs 12. For usage up to 25,000 litres, the rate per thousand litres of water decreased from Rs 20 to Rs 15, the MLA stated.
In fact, the water tariff was revised by the administrative officer from November 1, 2023. However, the CMC President directed the urban local body to review the tariff in the interest of the general public on August 29, 2024. Following this, the CMC meeting held on September 6, 2024, discussed the issue and resolved to reduce the tariff, the MLA added.
