Mumbai: To attend or not to attend lunches and dinners hosted by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena’s MPs and ministers — this is the dilemma facing Sena (UBT) MPs in New Delhi. Amid reports that six Sena (UBT) MPs would defect to the Sena, a row has broken out over UBT MPs attending dinner meets and events hosted by Shinde Sena’s Union ministers and MPs. During his visit to the national capital, Aaditya Thackeray spoke to MPs and is said to have told them to avoid attending such events or at least take prior permission from the party, since this leads to speculation about possible defection.
However, Sena (UBT) MPs said it was the norm in Delhi to attend dinners or events hosted by ministers from Maharashtra and it was not right to stop MPs from going to such events.
This week, 3-4 Sena (UBT) MPs were seen attending events hosted by Shinde Sena ministers and MPs, including one hosted by MP Shrikant Shinde. Political observers said this kind of dinner diplomacy and meetings were common in Delhi, especially during Parliament sessions, and guests cut across political lines. Stopping MPs from attending such events was impossible and pointless, they said.
Some MPs were upset when Aaditya asked them to give advance notice when going for meetings or meals hosted by netas of other parties. MPs told Aaditya political rivalry had to be kept aside if MPs were called by Union ministers.
