2 dead in separate train mishaps between Thane and Kalwa stations

THANE: A 40-year-old mason from Orissa fell to his death from a local train Wednesday morning, while in another incident, a 37-year-old carpenter was fatally run over by an unidentified train the previous evening incidentally at the same spot between Thane and Kalwa stations, railway police officials informed.
In the first instance, a carpenter identified by the police as H Sutar, a resident of Gaware Chawl, Kisan Nagar, Thane, was fatally knocked down by an unidentified train around 5pm Tuesday near pole km number 33 between Thane and Kalwa stations.
The guard of a passing train alerted the station authorities, who rushed to the spot and took the victim to the govt hospital and subsequently shifted him to a Mumbai hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries Wednesday, a railway police staff member from Thane said.
In an eerie coincidence, the spot witnessed another mishap the following morning after a 40-year-old mason from Kalwa, identified as Sudarshan Sahu, who was travelling to work in Ghatkopar, fell off the train.
“My brother worked as a mason and is survived by his wife and two young daughters in my native place in Orissa. I was shocked to know when the police told me almost an hour later after we left home that he died after falling off a train at Kalwa. We left for work together, and while I travelled by road, he took the train,” said his elder brother Shivshankar, a resident of Kalwa East.
Meanwhile, activists have raised concerns about the continuing spate of mishaps reported on the Thane suburban corridor, where nearly 44 people have lost their lives due to various reasons this year.
