Mumbai: A seven-year-old boy died after falling into an open pit that was dug at the ST bus depot premises in Kurla East, on Saturday, around 4pm.
The boy was identified as Ujwal Ravi Singh, who was rushed to civic-run Rajawadi Hospital, where he was declared dead.
According to information shared by the civic body, the boy fell into the pit that was dug up for track construction by the RTO.
A civic official said inquiries are still being made on how the boy fell into the pit. “It is learned that the kids from the neighbourhood often came to play on the premises, and the watchman had asked them to refrain from playing,” said an official.
Police said they registered an accidental death report (ADR) and will investigate further. The boy’s aunty, Kashmira Raghavpatre, said that he studies at a municipal school in Kurla.
“His mother worked as a house maid and father had passed away six months back. He jumped into the pit that was dug up and filled with water. He probably got stuck in it. This is what police told us,” said his aunty.
The boy’s body was yet to be handed over to the family. His mother Renuka Singh was inconsolable, said the relative. The final rites of the boy are likely to be performed on Sunday.
It may be recalled that on Nov 10, an 18-month-old boy, Krishna Omprakash Gupta, had died after falling into an open drain on Gaondevi Road in Bhandup (W).
