THANE: The Thane unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau in Kalyan caught a traffic warden, Vaibhav Shirsath, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 2000 from a two-wheeler owner for parking a vehicle in a non-parking area.
ACB officials said the complainant’s motorcycle was parked in a non-parking area near Kalyan railway station on Tuesday. It was picked up by a towing van and kept at the Kalyan traffic office.
On Wednesday, when the complainant visited the traffic office to collect his two-wheeler, Shirsath told him that if he wanted his vehicle, he would have to pay a Rs 3000 bribe.
This led the two-wheeler owner to inform the Thane ACB, who subsequently laid a trap and caught Shirsath red-handed on the roadside while collecting Rs 2000 as a settlement amount.
The incident, meanwhile, has raised questions over the handling of the Kalyan traffic office since the warden, who is appointed only to help traffic police manage traffic in the city, is dealing with those whose vehicles are caught in non-parking areas.
