Traffic a mess in Mumbai's Lower Parel area, more buildings can hinder emergency services, says CHS

MUMBAI: Demanding a halt to clearances for new buildings in the area until the infrastructure is upgraded, residents of a Lower Parel tower, in their notice to BMC and police, said, “All these new constructions will tremendously increase human and vehicular traffic and burden the existing infrastructure. Huge car park to accommodate about 300 to 400 cars is being constructed on the land of Phoenix Mills. If these constructions are permitted any further, the entire existing infrastructure system in the area is also likely to collapse. The increasingly serious traffic problems not only affect people’s travel experience and air pollution but also seriously hinder the development of the city’s economy.” The notice was sent by Chaitanya Mehta, managing partner, Dhruve Liladhar & Co, on behalf of the society.
The residents also complained about the traffic mess at Senapati Bapat Marg, especially on a narrow road below the bridge near Phoenix mall. Navigating their way out of the locality has become difficult, the said.
“Our grievance is also the lack of effort by the authorities to think in terms of solutions for the existing traffic problems in the area – and we aren’t even talking of the impact after the 40-plus storey office buildings are built,” said Deepak Jain, chairman of the Phoenix Tower B-Wing housing society.
“Because of heavy and unregulated traffic, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes for residents to enter and exit,” the notice said.
“In the event of a medical emergency or accident or fire, such obstructions will delay emergency medical treatment or services and/or entrance of fire engines and ambulances into our clients’ property. Our clients have repeatedly complained about the same. However, till date, no remedial steps,” it added.
Civic officials refused to comment on the issue.
