Till Feb 9, no sale of birds or eggs in & near Chirner

Navi Mumbai: Raigad collector Kishan Jawale has imposed restrictions on the sale and purchase of birds and eggs, and their transportation or exhibition in and around the bird flu-affected Chirner village till Feb 9. Also, vehicular movement is banned within a 500-metre radius of the house in Chirner in Uran taluka with confirmed bird flu cases. Further, a survey has been ordered within a 10km radius of it. Meanwhile, disinfectants and sea sand are being used to bury the 1,237 culled backyard birds.
The collector’s order is also intended to prevent humans. Extra caution is taken in the area as the affected zone is on the outskirts of the Karnala Bird Sanctuary.
Dr Sachin Deshpande, district deputy commissioner of animal husbandry, said, “Our survey has been completed within 1km of the affected zone. No new cases of bird flu or symptoms are noticed.” Wildlife rescuer Vivek Keni said, “The culled birds were buried using sand and earth.” — Umesh K Parida
