THANE: In separate operations, the Thane Crime Branch recovered 113 mobile phones, including 10 stolen units seized from an accused and 113 devices either stolen or lost and were traced using the CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) portal. The total value of the recovered smartphones is around ₹15 lakh. In the first case, while investigating a mobile snatching case registered with Bhoiwada police station in Bhiwandi, the crime branch Unit-2 conducted a parallel probe and arrested Sajjaduddin Mohammad Maroof Khayyad, alias Guddu, a resident of Kausa, Mumbra, on the Rajnoli Bypass. Acting on information from a confidential informant, the team was guided by senior police officers. Upon interrogation and during the remand period, the accused confessed to 10 mobile thefts, and 10 handsets from different brands, valued at ₹1.13 lakh, were recovered from him, said Amar Singh Jadhav, DCP Crime. Further, police units across the region—Unit-2 in Bhiwandi, Unit-3 in Kalyan, and Unit-84 in Ulhasnagar—recovered 103 smartphones that were reported lost or stolen through tracing via the central CEIR portal, with a combined value of ₹14.77 lakh. The officer said, “We have taken the help of the Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR) to trace the handsets.” The officer added, “CEIR acts as a central system for all network operators to share details of blacklisted mobile devices so that devices blacklisted in one network do not work on other networks even if the SIM card is changed.” Ongoing procedures aim to ensure the return of recovered devices to their rightful owners and track down broader network members involved.
