Thane: In a bid to enhance and regulate firearm possession, the Thane Police cancelled 515 gun licences following a comprehensive review of existing permits. The crackdown, which intensified in 2024, saw the revocation of 433 licences, while an additional 82 permits were cancelled in 2025 across the Thane police commissionerate jurisdiction. Over 4,000 such licenses were issued by the city police in the past.
The sweeping review revealed multiple concerns that prompted the cancellations, including licensees’ failure to provide adequate justification for firearm possession, lapsed renewals, criminal backgrounds, and instances of misuse. “The move is to ensure firearms remain exclusively in the hands of individuals with legitimate security requirements,” said a senior police official.
The official added that while gun licences are primarily issued for personal security, many applicants fall short of meeting the essential criteria. “We’ve observed a concerning trend where people apply for firearms licences without valid justification,” the official stated. — Nishikant.Karlikar
