Mumbai: Tata Memorial Hospital‘s Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) in Kharghar is set for a major expansion, doubling its bed capacity from 500 to over 1,000 and adding new treatment facilities. “We are building one of the largest radiotherapy centres in India and commissioning a high-performance computing facility to tackle complex cancer research questions,” said Dr Sudeep Gupta, Director of Tata Memorial Centre.
A new 12-floor radiotherapy facility, expected to be commissioned by 2027, will house 12 linear accelerator (LINAC) machines, significantly reducing wait times for treatment. The centre aims to provide faster and more effective cancer care. Dr Navin Khattry, Deputy Director of ACTREC, said the perception that the Parel facility is primarily for treatment while the Navi Mumbai centre is focused on research “is far from the truth”. “ACTREC plays a crucial role in both patient care and research,” he said.
In 2024, ACTREC performed 6,168 cancer surgeries, including 1,680 for breast cancer, 1,464 for head and neck cancers, and 1,012 colorectal procedures. The hospital also conducted 650 surgeries for hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) and upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, 468 uro-oncology surgeries, and 532 gynaecologic oncology procedures. tnn
