Tada court denies Abu Salem's plea for release date information

Mumbai: A special TADA court on Tuesday rejected terror convict and gangster Abu Salem’s plea requesting information on the number of days left for his incarceration. In Oct, while seeking the rejection of Salem’s plea, the prosecution submitted that, as per the Supreme Court, it is evident that he must undergo a punishment of 25 years, which includes the setoff. The prosecution further submitted that, therefore, the prison authorities were not obligated to furnish the exact date to the convict.
“Since this interpretation is based on the SC order, in case any clarification is required, the convict will have to move SC. In light of the above facts, particularly since the issue of the 25-year sentence was settled by SC, the question of providing the final date of sentence completion or the release date by jail authorities does not arise,” the reply said.
Salem sought the court’s direction to the prosecution to furnish him with the date of his release from Nashik Central Prison upon completion of his term. He was in jail in India since his extradition from Portugal 19 years ago.
