Calangute: Groups of domestic tourists visiting Calangute continue to drink alcohol openly on the beach with authorities turning a blind eye, tourism stakeholders said.
Manuel Cardozo, president of the Goan Traditional Shacks Owners’ Association said, “If you go from Baga to Calangute you will find at least 50 groups of tourists drinking on the beach, but have you ever heard of anyone being caught?” while urging authorities to take action.
“The police outpost is there on the beach and they have jeeps but you never see anyone being caught,” he said. Pointing to issues faced by locals, Cardozo said, “Earlier a lot of our Goans used to come to Calangute. Many locals from neighbouring villages used to come but now nobody comes. If you go for a sunset walk or want to sit and watch the sunset, you find all tourists sitting on the beach with bottles.”
He said govt also needs to improve the infrastructure on the beach. “They’ve built the promenade but it’s a mess. Govt only looks at collecting revenue but no infrastructure has been provided. If someone wants to go to a toilet, there’s one toilet at Calangute. Then there’s a toilet at Baga and on the other side there’s a toilet at Candolim with nothing in between for those who don’t go to shacks,” he said.
