Mumbai: The sliding of the second girder of the Carnac Bridge has been completed. The process of sliding the north side girder, which weighs 550 metric tonnes, up to 9.30 metres within the civic area was successfully completed in about five hours on Tuesday. The 154-year-old Carnac Bridge is being reconstructed by the BMC.
“The sliding of the girder was carried out as part of a process to check whether the alignment and machinery are in place before the girder is slid over the railway portion and installed. The sliding was carried out in the presence of the railway administration and consultant. We have requested blocks around January 19, 20 from the railway administration. Once the girder is installed, the foundation created for sliding and installation will have to be dismantled. Thereafter, work on the approach road, including piers for the approach, would be taken up. We intend to complete work on the bridge before monsoon,” said a civic official. The civic body launched the first girder in October last year.
