Thane: The Kopri police arrested six persons, including a Yuva Sena office bearer, following a violent altercation late on Tuesday night. A cricket tournament, organised by the Siddhesh Abhnage Foundation in Kopri, Thane, was being held on the occasion of the birthday of MP Shrikant Shinde, but it quickly devolved into a heated confrontation between organisers and players, said a police officer.
According to police, the dispute erupted when certain players challenged the umpire’s decisions during the match, which rapidly escalated into a physical confrontation. The situation deteriorated to such an extent that police intervention became necessary. “The conflict began with disagreements over match proceedings and soon transformed into a violent clash, and both sides wielded knives and stumps,” stated a senior police officer quoting the complaint. The police promptly responded to the situation and took six individuals into custody, including Siddhesh Abhnage.
Both the organisers and players registered counter-cases, further complicating the legal aftermath of the incident. The arrested accused are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to determine the precise sequence of events and underlying causes of the dispute with the help of CCTV footage. Nishikant Vishwakar, the senior inspector of Kopri police station, said, “So far, we have not come across any knife-wielding footage; further probe is ongoing.”
