Mumbai: Twenty-five years after it was first proposed, Mumbai Suburban guardian minister Ashish Shelar announced that the leopard safari will be introduced at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).
Former state forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar too had made a similar announcement earlier.
G Mallikarjun, SGNP director, said they will now apply to the Central Zoo Authority for permission to start the leopard safari. Forest officials informed Shelar that the safari would require 30 hectares and Rs 5 crore to set up the facility. There are around 21 leopards at the SGNP rescue centre.
At present, SGNP hosts tiger and lion safaris. tnn
