Senior clerk from Public Works Department arrested in bribery case in Thane

Thane: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Thane arrested a senior clerk from the Public Works Department for demanding a two percent commission to approve a payment bill.
The accused, identified as Vijay Avhad, was presented before the court and remanded to police custody until Dec 29, according to ACB officials. The complainant’s friend, a contractor, gave him all work rights. Accordingly, the complainant completed work worth approximately Rs 10 lakh after taking a contract from the Public Works Department. When the complainant filed for the payment, Vijay Avhad demanded a bribe of Rs 25,000, representing two percent of the bill amount. This included Rs 5,000 for himself and Rs 20,000 allegedly for the department’s executive engineer.
Following this, the complainant filed a complaint with the Thane Anti-Corruption Bureau office. During verification of the complaint, it was revealed that Avhad negotiated the amount down to Rs 23,000. The ACB team then laid a trap at the Public Works Department office and caught Avhad red-handed while accepting the bribe. A case was registered against him at the Thane City Police Station, and he was subsequently arrested. Although the police conducted a search of his residence, nothing significant was found, said the ACB official.
