NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old man from a criminal gang involved in robbery and attempted murder in Maharashtra’s Palghar was arrested after evading the police for 21 years, officials said on Tuesday.
The accused, Baburao Anna Kale, a member of the Pardhi gang, had been living under a false identity. He was caught on December 20 in Valkhed village, Partur taluka, Jalna district.
The incident dates back to January 9, 2003, when four robbers broke into a bungalow in Bolinj-Agashi, Virar, Palghar. They tied up the residents, threatened them with knives, and stole gold jewelry worth Rs 1.33 lakh and Rs 25,000 in cash.
They also tried to rob a nearby bungalow but found nothing valuable.
The Virar police registered a case the same day under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to robbery, wrongful confinement, and house trespass. In 2005, one of the accused, Suchinath alias Rajesh Satyavan Pawar, was arrested, but Kale and two others managed to escape.
Recently, the Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar (MBVV) crime branch reopened the investigation. Acting on a tip-off, a team, with help from local police, tracked Kale to his native village in Jalna and arrested him.
During questioning, Kale admitted to being involved in at least 10 other crimes, including theft and attempted murder, across various locations in Jalna and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The police are still searching for the two other accused from the 2003 robbery case.
