Navi Mumbai: A railway police constable was found dead after two unidentified men pushed him in front of a moving train between Rabale and Ghansoli stations around 5.30 am on Wednesday. The post-mortem examination report of constable Vijay Chavan (42), a resident of Ghansoli village, indicates that he had been ‘strangled’.
A case of murder has been registered against two unidentified men by Government Railway Police at Vashi.
The motorman of a local train alerted the railway police at Vashi that he had seen two men push someone on the tracks, in front of the train he was motoring, said senior inspector Rajesh Shinde of Government Railway Police. When the police reached the spot, they found the man (later identified as a railway cop) with severe injury after being knocked down by the train. He was declared ‘brought dead’ at a hospital.
The officer said it appeared like the constable had first been strangled and the body brought to the tracks to be thrown in front of a train. “It is likely that they wanted to make it appear like the railway cop had committed suicide,” the officer said. A search for the two men is on to ascertain the motive.
