Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Friday met the BMC commissioner with a demand to levy a utility charge on underground cables.
In a meeting, Thackeray also demanded an additional fee for patients coming from outside Mumbai and Maharashtra for undergoing treatment at Mumbai’s civic hospitals.
MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande stated that levying charges on the approximately 42 different utilities could generate revenue of ₹8,000-10,000 crore for the civic body.
In the memorandum of demands submitted to the civic chief, the MNS claimed that the civic-run KEM Hospital has a capacity of 2,250 beds, but over 10,000 patients are treated there daily. Annually, over 30-35 lakh patients from other states undergo treatment at the hospital. Therefore, the party has demanded that treatment at govt hospitals should be provided only to those with a local Aadhaar card address.
Responding to a question about the BMC’s recent ban on Plaster of Paris Ganpati idols in Mumbai, Thackeray said that idol makers should adapt to the change and switch to eco-friendly clay.
“The pollution caused by Plaster of Paris is significant. I believe idol makers should take this into consideration and come up with a solution,” Thackeray said.
