Policeman recording Awhad press conference not allowed to leave MLA residence

Thane: NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad objected to a plainclothes policeman recording a press conference called by him at his residence in the city on Friday.
The policeman was briefly detained at the Awhad residence in the afternoon. He was allowed to leave only after senior police officials intervened.
“I called media-persons to my private residence to address a press conference on Friday afternoon when I noticed this man recording a video. When I asked him for his identity, he said he was from the special branch of Thane police … . How can the police enter my private residence and start recording my press conferences?” he said.
Awhad insisted on speaking to senior police officials, seeking an explanation before letting the policeman leave his residence.
The legislator attacked the govt, questioning its motive behind keeping watch on opposition politicians and said they should ideally be keeping surveillance on elements like Walmik Karad, an accused arrested in the alleged murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh.
“Karad’s notoriety in Beed district surpasses even that of gangsters like Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Rajan, and Arun Gawli. Industrialists in Mumbai feared gangsters, but in Beed even the police are afraid of Karad,” he said.
Awhad has in th epast targeted the Devendra-Fadnavis-led govt over Karad, who is considered a close aide of NCP minister Dhananjay Munde.
