Mumbai: An on-duty policeman suffered head injuries when a man blocking a busy road in Malad (W) attacked him with a stick on Tuesday.
Assistant sub-inspector Manik Sawant (52) of Malad police station is undergoing treatment, said sources.
Around 12.30pm, Sawant and his colleague, constable Gaikwad, were patrolling the streets in the run-up to Christmas Eve. They drove on New Link Road from Kanchpada signal to Ramchandra Lane when they noticed a snarl-up near the Old Sonal Industries entrance. They got off their vehicle and saw Harijan standing in the middle of the road, making gestures and blocking traffic. Sawant asked him to move aside, but Harijan started to argue with him. Sawant then physically moved Harijan to one side of the road, and along with Gaikwad, began restoring traffic movement. When Sawant asked Harijan to leave, the latter issued dire threats to the cop, the FIR claimed. Harijan allegedly picked up a wooden stick and struck Sawant on his head, just above his ear. The blow caused Sawant to feel dizzy, and he fell on the road. Even as Gaikwad rushed to his injured colleague’s aid, Harijan threw the stick and fled.
Gaikwad informed his superiors and rushed Sawant to Tunga Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. Later, Gaikwad made enquiries and learnt that Harijan resided in Kanchpada. Subsequently, an offence has been registered against Harijan for assaulting a govt servant under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Earlier this month, an autorickshaw driver was arrested for assaulting a police constable with a paver block in Powai.
Sources said traffic police had intercepted the auto driver when he was found indulging in rash driving on Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road. Police suspected he was drunk and asked him to undergo a breathalyzer test. After he tested positive, traffic police informed their counterparts at Powai police station. Constable Chintaman Belkar was escorting the auto driver into the police van, when he attacked him with a paver block. Belkar was injured and rushed to hospital.
