Pod taxis to link Mira-Bhayander-Ghodbunder Road similar to Vadodara Project, says Maharashtra minister

Mumbai: State transport minister Pratap Sarnaik, after inspecting the implementation of advanced podcar transportation in Vadodara, Gujarat, this week, announced that a similar pod taxi system will be implemented on Mira-Bhayander and Ghodbunder Road in Thane. This will be the second such project in the Mumbai metropolitan region, with the first pod taxi already approved for Bandra Kurla Complex.
“Each pod taxi can accommodate at least 20 passengers and travel at speeds of 60 to 70 km per hour. They are powered by onboard electric motors and battery systems. They are designed to be effective in densely populated areas while utilising minimal urban space,” Sarnaik said.
During his Vadodara visit, he saw that the podcar project there was equipped with an onboard collision avoidance system and a 25-metre following distance, ensuring safety remained a top priority in this advanced transport solution. The podcar bottom is positioned 6 metres above road level, requiring minimal urban space. The stations require only 4-6 small pillars less than 1 m x 1 m, making it ideal for densely populated areas. This high-capacity transit system can transport over 15,000 passengers per direction per hour, addressing mass mobility challenges effectively.
Sarnaik explained the Vadodara project and expressed optimism about initially implementing the “advanced podcar” transport system in the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation area in Maharashtra, an official from Mantralaya said. The system can seamlessly integrate into the existing metro network, offering an effective solution to connect metro stations with multiple source and destination points in the near future. The pod cars also have a small turning radius, compact station design, ease of deployment along existing roads, and smooth integration with metro stations, the official added.
Another official from the ministry said that the pod taxi projects are being planned under a Public-Private Partnership model. The estimated completion time is within a three-year period. “The govt will have to provide the land and not spend much on the PPP project,” he said. Some of the benefits of the project include improving last-mile connectivity, reducing congestion, and providing a modern, efficient mode of transportation. It will also help people with disabilities become more independent and help the economically weaker sections get access to higher-paying jobs.
