169 accidents, 83 deaths on NH48 ; Palghar SP writes to NHAI!
Identified issues include lack of guard rails, warning boards, crash barriers, and traffic management. NHAI plans to work on these concerns and present a proposal for approval.

After 169 accidents, in which 83 people have died in 2024, the Palghar Superintendent of Police (SP) has written to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to implement safety measures on an urgent basis.
Mumbai Mirror (Times group) had conducted a survey exposing the issues faced by the commuters on a daily basis while traveling on the Mumbai Ahmedabad National Highway (NH48).
The issues ranged from absence of guards to guide, warning boards, lack of cement bags with reflectors, traffic snarls and absence of crash barriers.
The NHAI has reacted to this letter stating that they shall work with their team of Engineers and present a proposal to its authority.
The letter issued by the Palghar SP Balasaheb Patil mentions the accidents in his jurisdiction which has 86 kilo meters of the NH48, on which the white topping project is in progress.
While interacting with him he had mentioned that We will be discussing all the grave concerns and ramp up the safety measures. The letter mentions that from January 2024 to December 2024, since the commencement of white topping project, 169 accidents have occurred, in which 83 people have lost their lives. Hence it has become imperative to expedite the safety measures, including the crash barriers.
Speaking on this NHAI Project Director & GM (Technical) said that, “We will get this verified from our team of engineers and after their report is ready, we shall seek approval from the authorities”.
The NHAI officials had earlier claimed that signboards were being provided at construction zones where work is in progress or diversion is provided and regular signages are deficient on the stretch, a detailed signage plan for the entire stretch has been sent to Delhi for approval with a budget of approx 27 Cr.
