Mumbai: An altercation over a stray dog led a man to assault a morning walker at Juhu beach with a knife early on Sunday.
Juhu police have arrested the accused, Omkar Mukhiya (26) on charges of attempt to commit murder.
The victim, Arjun Giri (28), is a Powai resident and a share broker. Around 6.30am, Giri and his friend visited Juhu beach for a morning walk. After the walk, they headed to a food stall.
“A stray dog came close to Giri and started barking at him. Giri picked up a chair lying nearby and hit the dog with it to shoo the stray away. This angered Mukhiya who was present in the vicinity and witnessed the incident. He started arguing with Giri,” said a police officer. Police say they believe Mukhiya is an animal lover.
The argument snowballed into violence when Mukhiya grabbed a knife from the food stall and slashed Giri. Police said Giri suffered serious injuries to his thumb, besides his abdomen, arm, back, head and both his hands. He was hospitalised and is now out of danger.
After the Juhu police were informed, they tracked down Mukhiya and arrested him the same day. They are yet to recover the knife used in the attack. Police said Mukhiya washes dishes and cleans utensils at establishments for a living. tnn
