The Delhi government is reportedly considering a ban on new registrations of petrol and diesel two-wheelers starting August 2026. This proposal is said to be a key part of the upcoming Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, aimed at accelerating the transition to cleaner mobility in the capital.
If implemented, this move would make electric scooters and motorcycles the only option for new two-wheeler buyers in Delhi after the deadline.
The policy also proposes a mandate for electric vehicles as the third car in any household, ensuring a gradual shift to cleaner alternatives. Additionally, the registration of new fossil fuel-powered three-wheelers will reportedly be halted from August this year, pushing for a complete transition to electric autorickshaws. For existing CNG-run three-wheelers over 10 years old, owners may have to either replace them with EVs or retrofit them with electric powertrains.
To support this large-scale shift, the government is said to be working on expanding EV charging infrastructure, with plans to install more public charging points and enforce mandatory charging provisions in new buildings and public spaces.
With these measures, Delhi aims to achieve 95% EV penetration by 2027, making it one of the most aggressive clean mobility initiatives in the country.
The Delhi EV Policy, 2020, introduced by the previous AAP government to boost EV adoption, expired on August 8, 2024, and has since been extended multiple times, with the latest extension running until March 31, 2024. The upcoming Delhi EV Policy 2.0 is expected to replace it, offering a long-term strategy to further accelerate electric mobility in the capital.
