Mumbai: The solution proposed by transport minister Pratap Sarnaik to reduce daily traffic congestion at the Dahisar checkpoint was finally implemented, leading to shorter queues and smoother traffic flow from the weekend.
Sarnaik said that without persistent follow-up, a precise solution to a problem cannot be found, as shown in the case of the Dahisar toll checkpoint. “After inspecting three times and ensuring the implementation of suggested measures by the contractors, I succeeded in largely resolving the traffic congestion issue,” he said.
Motorists have complained of long traffic jams at this bottleneck at Dahisar check post daily. “The toll has been removed, but the traffic snarls continued until recently. If we are coming to the city from Mira Road Bhayander side, or leaving Mumbai (from Dahisar side), we have to wait for a long time to cross this check post,” said Uday Kulkarni, a motorist, while welcoming move to decongest the check naka.
Currently, only two lanes on each side are reserved for heavy vehicles at the Dahisar checkpoint, leaving the rest of the road clear. Instructions regarding this have been placed at various points 500 metres away on both sides. This allows light vehicles to proceed directly on the wide road beside the toll booth without reducing speed.
Additionally, heavy traffic heading towards Mumbai will be halted before Mira-Bhayandar city from 8am to 11am, reducing the likelihood of road narrowing due to parked trucks. Despite these measures, if traffic congestion persists in the future, the toll booth will operate with only one lane, keeping the rest of the road clear.
Sarnaik said the decongestion was possible, thanks to the efforts taken by the traffic police and transport officials.
