The Los Angeles Lakers are exploring a potential blockbuster trade ahead of the NBA trade deadline, with Sacramento Kings star De’Aaron Fox emerging as a surprise target. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Kings are expected to open trade discussions for De’Aaron Fox before the February 6 deadline. “The Sacramento Kings are expected to open up talks to potentially deal All-Star De’Aaron Fox ahead of Feb. 6 trade deadline, sources tell ESPN,” Charania reported.
De’Aaron Fox, a dynamic point guard averaging 26.1 points per game this season, is drawing interest from multiple teams. Forbes’ Evan Sidery reported that while Fox prefers a move to the San Antonio Spurs, other suitors, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, and Houston Rockets, are expected to pursue him. “Fox prefers a trade to the Spurs, but the Heat, Lakers and Rockets will also pursue,” Sidery stated.
What would this trade cost the Los Angeles Lakers?
The Los Angeles Lakers, led by GM Rob Pelinka, will likely engage in discussions with Sacramento, but landing De’Aaron Fox won’t come cheap. LA is expected to offer a package centered around Rui Hachimura, Max Christie, and Jarred Vanderbilt, which aligns financially with Fox’s contract. However, the Sacramento Kings hold significant leverage, given that multiple teams are interested in acquiring the All-Star guard.
Sacramento is reportedly pushing for a package that includes Austin Reaves, a fan favorite whom the Lakers are reluctant to part with. A trade package of Hachimura, Christie, and Reaves would also match Fox’s salary, making it an appealing option for the Sacramento Kings. This puts the Lakers in a tough position—either they hold onto Reaves or go all-in on adding De’Aaron Fox to their roster.
