Mumbai: Fatalities in road-related crashes in the city dropped steadily by 39% from from 611 fatalities in 2015 to 374 in 2023, according to data released by Mumbai Traffic Police in association with Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS). Fatalities dropped marginally from 387 in 2021 to 374 in 2023.
Among the 15 high-risk corridors identified in the city for the three years from 2021 to 2023, Babasaheb Ambedkar Marg in Byculla recorded the highest number of deaths (10) and injuries (35) per kilometre. The intersection of Sion-Panvel Highway and Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (15), Kalanagar junction in Bandra East (13), and Amar Mahal junction (11) in Ghatkopar recorded the highest fatalities in these three years.
Vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, two and three-wheeler riders, and cyclists, continued to be the most impacted by road crashes in Mumbai. In 2023, they accounted for 89% of the city’s road crash deaths, in 2022 it was 95%, and 93% in 2021.
In the three years from 2021 to 2023, two and three-wheeler riders accounted for the majority of road crash deaths in Mumbai. In 2023, 179 (48%) occupants of two and three-wheelers were killed, followed by 180 (50%) in 2022 and 181 (50%) in 2021.
Hit-and-run cases accounted for 38% of all fatal crashes in 2023, 44% in 2022, and 27% in 2021. The share of road users affected by hit-and-runs was similar to that of 2022.
In 2021, 58% of pedestrians died in hit-and-run cases.
In 2023, the vast majority of victims due to hit-and-run crashes were pedestrians (54%) and motorcyclists (44%).
