Mumbai: A 47-year-old motorist at the wheel of a car lost his life after the car jumped the divider on the Western Express Highway (WEH) and collided into a private travels bus in Borivli East early on Monday. Kasturba Marg police registered an FIR against the motorist but with his death, the case will be closed.
The travels bus was plying from Ratnagiri to Mumbai. Around 4.45 am, it reached Sanjay Gandhi National Park and all passengers, except one, got off. The passenger who was left, Anil Gurav, 32, witnessed the collision.
Gurav later told the police that he lived in Malad East and did odd jobs for a living. He had visited his hometown in Ratnagiri on Feb 1 to clean his family home situated there. He boarded the bus around 6 pm on Feb 2 to head back to his Malad East home.
The crash occurred around 5 am on Magathane bridge on the WEH. Gurav told the police that the car was in speed. It jumped the divider and hit the bus on the right side. The impact of the collission was felt inside the bus, Gurav recollected to the police.
The bus driver, Amrutlal Pal, swerved to the left to avoid any further impact. But the steering had jammed due to the collision. The bus crossed the divider before its front tyre burst. It then came to a halt.
Gurav told the police that he was terrified after the collission and hopped out of the bus as soon as it halted. He went over to the car and found the motorist trapped in the seat, blood oozing out of his head. A crowd of bystanders gathered and someone dialled the police.
Gurav waited with Pal and bus conductor Bhailal Nohar. The Kasturba Marg Police and the fire brigade arrived. The fire brigade extricated the motorist, later identified as Amit Aggarwal, from the car. A severely injured Aggarwal was rushed to the Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital where he was pronounced dead by doctors around 6.30 am. The police notified his family and handed over the car to them.
Based on Gurav’s statement, an FIR was registered. Police said Aggarwal lived in Borivli.
