NEW DELHI: MNS members in Thane’s Ambernath confronted a nationalised bank’s manager over his non-usage of Marathi language, creating local tensions.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when party activists stormed into the bank and aggressively challenged the manager for not using Maharashtra’s official language whilst dealing with customers.
The confrontation was recorded and became viral on social platforms. The footage displayed activists striking the desk, pushing a monitor and verbally attacking the manager, insisting on Marathi communication.
Maintaining his composure, the bank manager informed the MNS workers that being part of an All India Service, he was authorised to use any approved language for official interactions.
“One cannot be expected to learn the local language instantly; it takes time,” he is heard saying in the video.
The local division of Raj Thackeray’s organisation acknowledged their members’ involvement in the incident. The status of any police report regarding the confrontation remained uncertain.
Simultaneously, Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena activists persisted with their efforts to safeguard the Marathi language.
A delegation headed by MNS student wing general secretary Sandeep Pachange visited the Education Officer at Thane’s Zilla Parishad, presenting a memorandum requesting firm action against English medium schools that restrict Marathi speaking.
On Tuesday, MNS activists circulated letters to district banks, emphasising that Marathi should be the primary customer communication language.
They also removed a bank’s banner in the city due to the absence of Marathi text.
During his Gudi Padwa rally on March 30, Raj Thackeray reaffirmed his party’s position on making Marathi compulsory for official purposes.
