Navi Mumbai: A mentally ill man, aged 25-30 years, climbed a high tension power transmission tower at Belpada in sector-3, Kharghar, creating panic among passersby on Tuesday afternoon. Some among the spectators alerted Kharghar police who, in turn, summoned the fire brigade rescue team.
Deepak Surve, Kharghar SI, said, “When police reached the spot, the man had already scaled 100 feet of the tower, and was reluctant to climb down. We were worried he might get electrocuted. Fortunately, the electricity tower was not operational. He climbed down after about 30 minutes. Initially, it was suspected that he climbed the tower under the influence of alcohol, but we later learnt he was mentally ill and undergoing treatment.” — George Mendonca
