Mumbai: The city experienced a hot Friday as temperatures soared and the IMD Santacruz observatory recording 37.3°C, up from 36.3°C the previous day. The IMD Colaba observatory registered 34.3°C, a rise from 31.2°C a day earlier.
In its forecast for Saturday, the IMD said maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 37°C. and 20°C, respectively. Sunil Kamble, head of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai, said the absence of northerly winds — due to minimal snowfall in the north — is contributing to the persistent heat. “It is not unusual for the latter half of February to be warmer as this is also the time when winter transitions to summer.”
Nevertheless this year, even the first half saw no temperature dips. With no major changes expected, relief from the heat remains unlikely said experts. — Richa Pinto
