Mumbai: The state on Wednesday informed Bombay High Court that it had transferred the probe into four complaints, including two by a Chembur resident who was allegedly manhandled by co-passengers on a train for refusing to utter a religious chant, from Kankavli police station to Kudal police station in Sindhudurg district.
Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Neela Gokhale were hearing a petition by Asif Sheikh (37). On Jan 19, 2024, he was returning to Mumbai with his wife and two minor daughters. Trouble allegedly began after he asked a group of students not to sing loudly. The first complaint was registered at Panvel and then transferred to Kankavli. There was a cross-complaint registered against him. Sheikh alleged a local politician asked him to withdraw the complaint. When he returned home from the police station, he was allegedly threatened by persons claiming to be the politician’s supporters. This resulted in a second complaint and also a cross-complaint.
Prosecutor Prajakta Shinde said the four FIRs were transferred and the deputy superintendent of police will supervise the probe. On a police report that there is no threat perception, the judges withdrew police protection given to Sheikh. They clarified he can re-apply for it if the situation arises.tnn
