Mumbai: The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, jointly with the municipal bodies in the state, raided several retail installations across Maharashtra and confiscated a huge stock of banned single-use plastic bags weighing 14.50 tonnes. The raids were conducted by the flying squads between June 5, 2024, and Jan 26, 2025. During the seven-month-long operation, the squads visited a total of 15,420 retail shopkeepers and took action against 901 of them. A penalty of 26,36,000 was recovered, said a press release.
During this period, a total of 8 storage godowns were also inspected in the state. The actions were conducted in Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi Nizampur, Sangli Kolhapur, Chiplun, Kankavali, Chandrapur, and Akola.
MPCB will soon launch a massive campaign to implement the single-use plastic ban jointly with the municipal corporations and other smaller local self-govt organisations in the state. Ordinary citizens should also participate or initiate at their level a campaign to create awareness on avoiding the use of single-use plastic, appealed Siddhesh Kadam, Chairman of the Maharashtra Pollution Board. At the same time, Kadam requested that the retail and casual traders’ associations in the state should initiate similar campaigns to encourage members not to sell, store, or distribute single-use plastic.
