Maharashtra minister Pratap Sarnaik directs agencies to explore new transport, parking solutions

MUMBAI: Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has directed agencies to explore additional transport options, including ropeways, pod taxis, and water taxis, to tackle rising commuter demand in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). He has also asked MMRDA to conduct a feasibility study for underground parking facilities at key locations, given the acute parking shortage in the city.
These issues were discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Sarnaik, attended by officials from the Urban Development Department, Maharashtra Maritime Board, Transport Commissioner’s office, and State Transport Corporation. The meeting focused on integrating alternative transport solutions to ease congestion and improve last-mile connectivity.
Sarnaik emphasized the need to introduce ropeways as a distinct transport service and suggested that a new mechanism be created for its implementation.
“Currently, ropeway projects fall under the Public Works Department (PWD). The department should draft new regulations to streamline the process,” he said.
On pod taxis, Sarnaik instructed officials to fast-track the 8.8-km Bandra East-Kurla corridor, which will have 38 stations with a stop every 15 seconds. He stressed the importance of expediting approvals and planning the project efficiently.
To address parking challenges, MMRDA has been asked to survey potential sites for underground parking plazas.
“Given the severe space crunch, these facilities should also include commercial malls to optimize land use,” the minister added. A consultant will be appointed to oversee the planning and execution of these projects.
The government is also considering water taxis as a viable transport alternative, with plans for dedicated terminals and routes under review.
