Maharashtra: Crackdown on pillions riders not wearing helmets; e-challan machines to reflect separate violations

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra state traffic police ordered a crackdown on pillions not wearing helmets while travelling on two-wheelers. This action will be in addition to enforcement against two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets.
Importantly, differentiation between the two violations will now reflect in e-challan machines.
In a circular sent to traffic police branches of all cities and rural areas in the state, Maharashtra traffic police noted that enforcement of the helmet rule is low.
The circular also stated that not wearing helmets is a key cause of road crashes, impacting both riders and pillions of two-wheelers. The circular called for strict enforcement against riders as well as pillions.
Earlier, e-challan machines accounted for violations under a single head, “riding without helmet by driver.” But from now onwards, they will make a differentiation and maintain a separate head, “riding without helmet by pillion.”
