Loan scam: One held from UP for extorting Rs 9k from Bandra woman

Mumbai: The Bandra police have arrested a suspect from Uttar Pradesh in connection with a loan scam where victims’ personal information was accessed by fraudsters through an online link. Subsequently, their photos were morphed, and they were blackmailed for money. The accused was picked up from Bulandshahr, police said. He is a college dropout and his associates are wanted.
Explaining the modus operandi, police said that the gang of accused persons sent a link to people seeking a loan online. The targets were asked to fill in personal details in the link and upload documentation via their cellphones. Once they clicked on the link and submitted their information, the accused would gain access to contacts and images on their phones. The accused then morphed the target’s images and threatened to send them out to the target’s contacts unless they paid up. Irrespective of whether the target repaid the loan, they were blackmailed through morphed photos.
In the latest case, a sum of Rs 9,000 was extorted from a victim living in Bandra, and photos were morphed by the accused. Police said the suspect arrested from UP was tasked with receiving defrauded sums from the targets into various bank accounts, then withdrawing the cash and sending it to an associate. The associate would then convert the cash into cryptocurrency and send it to the mastermind. Police recovered debit cards and cellphones from the arrested suspect. He was booked under provisions of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology Act.
